off to a rough start! Wednesday, October 19, 2011 7:22 AM (permalink)
0
On my way to work this morning, my started to sputter and die on me. I pulled over turned it off and then started her back up and it seemed fine. About half a mile further it just bogs down and I have no throttle response at all. So I pull over again and inspect the the intake tube for any blockage but found nothing.

Could this be an internal issue such as valves? Or maybe computer?

Any idea would be great!!

Usually on a newer car I would say a MAP or Air flow sensor, but what make/model/year do you have?

Are you getting a check engine light?

I was thinking that too or maybe a vacuum hose. I haven't had time to play with it since I'm at work.

This is on my 03 wrangler. 4.0L

Oh boy, pay check spent lol.

I forgot to mention earlier, yes the check engine light is on. It comes and goes every since I bought the jeep so I never thought anything of it.

I doubt it is anything internal in the engine. I would start with a couple of checks like trouble codes (autozone will so this for free if you can get it there) and fuel pressure test before you spend money on parts.

Agreed. Check the check engine light before anything further. May just be your problem

Where ya located at i got a scanner i can throw on it and read data from the sensors if youd like. Possibilities are endless to what it can be but most likely it is electrical.

Check the codes - I am sure that will help.  I know plugs will even make the lights go off and engine will run bad.

No code reader or trip to AZ needed.  Insert key and do five clicks...on, off, on, off, on (go from off to run and back, not all the way to start) and the computer will display all codes on the odometer.  Once you have them, hit google and post up your findings.

Well I ended up scanning codes before I read about the on/trick. How did you learn that?

There were several codes. Crankshaft position sensor (weird, I replaced that and the whole timing ghagra that its on earlier this year), high engine temp and thermal sensor (I blew my radiator a couple months ago and replaced the thermostat and radiator)

The guy said the codes could trip the light even after you replace the parts if you don't reset/erase the codes. So he erased them but as soon as I left the parking lot it continued the same way.

i would check the vacuum elbows and fitting that are on the intake right at the throttle body. they tend to get oil soaked and either crack or come off.

Do Mark's on/off test now since the codes were cleared and see if you are still getting that crank sensor code. If so I would check the connector and replace it if the connector is good. Does the one you replaced it with have a warranty?

The overheating I would think is just a stored code from your previous problem and the vacuum would have to be really bad for it to bog and would usually lead to a fast or erratic idle.

Ok I ran the codes from the on/off test, looks like ignition coils #1,2, and 3 are not achieving primary cicuit peak.

And the CMP has a voltage problem.

So im guessing replace the coils and plugs and see what happens?

Well I pulled the coil and plugs. Plugs are fried but the coil looks fine. Installed new plugs and put the old coil back on, took her for a spin and everything is great.

Haha all the worry for nothin. And I get to take the new coil back and save $100.

Now I just need to erase the codes and see what happens.

Thanks for all the tips and advice. Although it ended up being a simple and cheap fix, I would have not known where to start if it wasn't for Yall.
