I was thinking about this as i have noticed a sputter in my f250 with 250,000 miles on it.  my f150 with 180k is showing a loss of power and a little bit of loss in fuel milage. I have heard of sea foam as an engine and intake cleaner though have never used it in the oil or intake just in the gas tank. So i googled it. lots of people go both ways on this, do or dont. i also found an article/ blogg about useing just plane hot water so i googled that too. i was just wondering if anybody had used these methods or any others. ill post the water article/blog link tp://blog.autospeed.com/2008/05/12/internal-engine-cleaning/

BIG thumbs up on the SeaFoam I have used it on several customers engines and including my own in the oil / down the throttle body and it works amazingly. But if you have a lot of sludge build up inside your motor you need to watch your oil pressure very closely cause it will cause large chunks to break loose and temporarly clog the pick up tube if this happens shut engine down and restart it and it will let the chunk fall back down so it can be desolved in the sump. this stuff is an extreme i had a customer with a severly sludged 305 we putting a new intake and carb on and he just wanted to push it a couple more months then rebuild it. we tore it apart last week to have it rebuilt and there was almost no sludge only thing left was some black grit in the oil pan sump and the stains the sludge left behind. this stuff is freakin awesome. Don't know how it works but it just does. also will help a vehicle pass an emissions test if you perform a combustion chamber cleaning with it via spraying it through the throttle body while running. it will make it smoke like a freight train thats all the carbon its burnning off.

Seafoam gets the thimbs up from me as well. I used it in several customers engines when I was a mechanic, and they all reported positives on it. I have heard mixed reviews about water and would be extremely weary on it.

I talked to my Dad some more about it, he has been a mechanic all his life, taught me everything i know and is uaslly my first phone call when i have a question. he said hed never put anything in the crankcase that wasnt oil. as for ****ing water through a vacume line to "steam clean" he said you would have to be very carefull that the compressoin would change inside the cyclender as water was being introduced. Steam dosnt compress at the same rate that fuel/air does and this may result in blown rings. My thoughts on this are: Is it the same for a treatment such as berrymans b12 and Seafoam? and " should i chance this on a high milage motor, just to gain a mpg and a bit of response? Was really hoping this would start a good thinking thread, so lets hear your thoughts.

The seafoam is safe in a crankcase cause its made from petroleum. As for ****ing through a vacuum line, thats kind of old school to use water. I do the same thing with Seafoam, and I know Keith uses it in his Tacoma and his wifes Rav4. It should help out alot, especially with carbon buildup now that the government insists on diluting fuel with ethanol, which doesnt combust very cleanly.
