Wheel base lengthening for my JK Friday, February 03, 2012 1:29 PM (permalink)

In the far future i plan on running 37/38s on my jk. With the current lift and armor combo i should be able run 40s+ but thats way to big for what i want to do lol.. I somewhat have plans for the dive train upgrade which i will post another thred when i actually plan on doing them.... as the far as current my current plan/idea- I want to move the rear axle back about and inch, from what ive researched i can do this safely without having to lengthen the drive shaft. only thing i would have to do is correct the bottom spring plate mount. as for actually pushing the axle back is where i cant find anything. would buying adjustable lower and upper control arms for the rear do the trick?
Thanks

(i want to do this b4 moving on because with the tiny a** 33s and the xrc armor the rear tires look too far fwd, this would also help with when i get bigger tires with pich seam clearance)

You can trim that pinch seam to get clearance. Some just take a hammer and bend it over.

I will still have to trim the pinch seam even after moving the axle back. so either way imma have to cut lol.. but with the bigger tires the jeep will look funny having more open space behind the rear tire than in front of the rear tire. I want it as close to center of the wheel well as possible.

You can just buy upper and lower adjustable arms, just make sure you have track bar and gas tank clearance to move back without hitting!

Yeah you will probably have to move the trackbar as well.  If I get a spring turned the wrong way it rubs on my trackbar as it is.

It would be much more than just longer control arms.  To do it properly, you really need to move everything back.  Upper spring mounts, track bar....  also, keep in mind that when your suspension compresses, the axle moves up and to the rear.  You really need to cycle thru your full range on that axle to see if moving the axle back is actually what you need or not.  I was able to run 37s on my 08 JKU by just folding over the pinch seam and making my own extended bump stops for the rear.  They were 1.5 inch or so.

Also, keep in mind, axle goes forward on droop, that is why it appears forward in the wheel well, and back on compression.  So, lift, axle forward.  If perfectly centered in wheel well when lifted on level ground, that would push it back farther than normal on suspension compression.

I think to do it properly, it is much more work than I would want to do and I really dont think it is needed.
