TX ORV Sticker Questions
Tuesday, November 16, 2010 2:24 PM
( permalink)
Hi, new to the area (sorry, I hated it too back home), understand we have to get some sort of ORV/OHV sticker on our vehicles to go wheeling. Is the sticker per-vehicle or per-person? I have more than one rig that will take wheeling at a time. Am not being whiney about $8 but if I could stick it on some refrigerator magnet stuff and swap to whatever rig I'm taking it'd be handy. Do you have to have TX tags? I don't have TX tags yet, damn inspection wants a working parking brake or some such H.S. I'll fix it later.

I don't think you have to have Texas tags. I found nothing on the Texas Parks and Wildlife site that said otherwise. I'd assume it is per vehicle although I didn't find anything on the site that specified that either. One line did say "An OHV decal is now required by law for all individuals operating an OHV in Texas"... Someone correct me if I'm wrong! I'm not an authority on the subject. SQUEAKY?

From my understanding these tags are per vehicle (tied to the VIN number) and you do not have to have texas tags. This lets those from out of the state (Lets say Oklahoma) drive his OHV of choice in the (superior) state of Texas. If you have ATVs, dirt bikes, a side by side. or even a dual sport bike, they need individual OHV stickers as well, if theyre gonna be run off road. This program benefits wheelers by helping out Texas Parks and Wildlife, so that the enviromentalists dont shut us down.

OHV sticker is per vehicle. There is no real tie to the VIN or anything, just some details on the stub in the book that the seller is "supposed to return" to TPWD but I don't think it is really recorded anywhere. This past year I bought two at BMRA when we were there for the cleanup run. Karen wrote down name, address, year and model per the stub. In past years I have ordered direct from Austin via phone...3 stickers please 01, 02, 03 Jeep Wrangler...thanks, what is your credit card number? was all I got from TPWD. I have never had to provide VIN or tag info. Bridgeport sells OHV's at the gate, perhaps Z, Lil Red or Mapman can chime in on this. I guess you could magnetize the sticker and move it between rigs but for $8 (that is supposed to go back to OHV parks) is it really worth running into a headstrong ranger that does not approve of your magnet trick? I've heard the tickets can be in the several hundred dollar range depending on the situation and the ranger.

Cool, thank! NBD, was kinda curious more than anything. AR was considering them at one point but it was going to be more involved and expensive so was thinking of it from that angle. But the USFS more greatly enjoys keeping humans out of the woods in general so the idea died quickly.

I've heard the tickets can be in the several hundred dollar range depending on the situation and the ranger. Well, 'supposed' to be tied to the VIN. I dont think theyre really too concerned with it. Lawton at BMRA had me fill out the info for my last sticker and it had a space for the VIN, but he said not to worry about it. As far as switching between vehicles...I suppose if they actually called in the sticker number to get the info off of it, you could get fined if the info doesnt match the vehicle, max fine being $500. But if $8 per vehicle is too much to help keep our parks open, you might want to reconsider priorities. They can be some interesting conversation pieces too. Ive had some people at work ask about mine. And all this reminds me I need a new sticker.

The key phrase here is "a sticker for each OHV" - meaning off highway vehicle, ....., I guess they could get more money though if they made it "a sticker for each OHP" - meaning off highway person, and we could stick them on our forehead. When I ordered my renewal sticker this year, I filled out a form and faxed it to TPW, then they called me back to get my credit card info. If I recall, it required the year, model, tag, and maybe the VIN of the vehicle, however, I am thinking that if a game-warden or park ranger encountered you on the trail, they are going to see if your sticker is current or expired, and probably not going to check to see if the sticker goes with the vehicle that is on file back in Austin. But, like was said, if $8 is too much to spend on each off highway vehicle to support a minimally funded department that manages the parks and trails that we enjoy, then you may want to consider another hobby. $8 is nothing compared to what you may really spend after being on the trails - I just replaced a cv axle and lower ball joint to the tune of around $300, which is nothing compared to some other carnage I've seen.

You must have done some smooth talking OR the Hunt County deputies were short a few rounds. I can tell you for a fact - that is not the case at all. The state registration sticker is required to allow you to drive your vehicle on public roads in the state of Texas. If you have a vehicle that is for off-road use ONLY, and not driven on public roads, which may be what they thought you were saying, then the requirement is not there.

at athe time it was just a trail rig, the deputy, who is also the code informent officer) lived next door. mine and a buddys truck stayed at my house parked in the side yard. he was cracking down on some people in the city for junk cars and towing them. he told me that so long as we kept our OHV stickers current that the city would accept it as a registered vehicle and would not tow it

the OHV stickers are really just for the state funded lands and stuff. if u off road at the private lands , like shiloh ridge park or general sams park or something like that. you do not need the sticker. but for bridgeport, barnwell, ect, you will need the sticker. its only 8 dollars, so its not bad, but i dont use it, cause i havnt been to a state funded park in 3 years. as for the state reg. i can see the officer/deputy saying that if your rig is parked on the side of the street or driveway. since cities are strict about that. but outside the city limits and HOA areas. its not a problem. my rig has not had the state reg for like 5years. but its not parked on the street or driven on the street, so they cant tow it cause its not on the plubic road. i always trailer it.

We do have the OHV stickers available at Northwest Park in Bridgeport...they are State mandated for off road use at any off road facility that is not privately owned, and are required for entrance at Bridgeport, which is owned and operated by the city... Besides, they make your rig look cooler, only $8, and will have all the mall crawlers running around in the city know that your rig hits the trails
