Problems with the toyota
Wednesday, November 02, 2011 9:50 AM
( permalink)
It started last week when I got my oil changed and they forgot the gasket on my drain plug. I took it back to them Monday to get it fixed and now since they fixed it my alternator is taking a dump and I have low oil pressure. Last night I dropped the oil pan and checked the oil pickup tube which everything was spotless in there so I went and got a new oil pump and put it on. After all that it's still got low oil pressure. I can't think of anything else that could cause my oil pressure to drop like it is. If anyone has any ideas the truck us an 81 with the 22r in it

Low or High voltage from the alternator could make the gauge read incorrectly. Check your voltage at the battery while running

Yesterday it was 10.7 volts while running today it's lower so I've got an alternator coming should be here after work. I'll get that put on and check it out. The oil pressure though is low for sure because the lifters are ticking and rattling. I think it might have something to do with the lube center putting a vacuum on the crankcase so they didn't have to drain the oil when replacing the gasket on the drain plug.

It's mad at you for not changing your own oil!

Yeah if I had time to change my own oil I would. With my work schedule it's hard to find time for anything

Hey Jew check the blinker fluid. It has been known to make a Yota engine Rattle and knock if it is low.

I am curious what viscosity of oil did they put in this motor? I ask because newer cars are running low viscosity oils to increase mileage but these old 22r motors need something higher.

rutz79 Hey Jew check the blinker fluid. It has been known to make a Jeep engine Rattle and knock if it is low. Rutz, wrong thread...this is about a Yota, not a Jeep. I think I have it figured out. Your posts are not being deleted, they are just in the wrong threads and you forgot where you put them.

If after replacing the alternator your gauge still reads low oil press. Get ahold of a mech oil pressure gauge and test the pressure specs for an 86 22r is 36-71psi at 3k rpms, at idle i would assume no lower than 30psi. If press is lower than that or jumps rapidly at idle then it maybe time for new rod and main bearings which can be done within a day for fairly cheap. I have a hook up on parts if needed.

I run 20w 50 in it. I hope it's not the bearings cuz the motor only has 26k on it.

I think that sounds a bit high, I would be happy with 5-10 at idle and 10 psi per 1K rpm. For example 30psi at 3k. I do have a mechanical oil gauge if you would like to test it.

ive got good new the low oil pressure on the gauge was because of the alternator assign as I got it fixed today it showed normal pressure. I'm still going to put a new oil pressure gauge in it though, I'm not sure I want to keep trusting the stocker

Just for an update for everyone my truck apparently has really amazing oil pressure. I just got through installing a mechanical gauge and my oil pressure at idle is 65 psi and at 3k rpms is 80 psi

I can't run anything thinner in the Toyota or it leaks out as fast as I pour it in. I'll fix all the leaks as soon as I get the Chevy going as my daily driver.
