We have an old house that has had a shower that drains slow on occasion since we bought the place. Yesterday it decided it was not going to drain at all. There are two bathrooms, back to back and apparently both showers & toilets all drain down into one place before going to the city system. When one backs up it backs up into the others and everything started to overflow at once. Not a good thing at all! Anyway, with some perseverance and tool rental from Home Depot, Steve was able to fix the stoppage.....which had most likely begun long before we were here. Way to go, baby! Steve can add plumbing (a little) to his list of "I can do"....he even has the plumbers crack

Yeah, same thing used to happen at my house - main sewer drain would clog every so often, and of course, it was always at the worst moment. First time it happened, I didn't know what to do or how to fix it - got taken for $500 by the plumber for my ignorance. When I saw what he did - run the roto-snake - I figured I'd save my money and do it myself when it happened the next time. Except, it kept happening again and again. Got sick of constantly renting and running the roto-snake from Home Depot. So I dug it up and found the source of the clog - roots from a landscaping shrub managed to squeeze into the PVC pipe joint, clogging the whole thing. The first time I cut up the roots and removed them. That lasted almost a year til the roots managed to grow back into the joint. Second time I dug it back up, removed the whole shrub and roots, and re-did the joint with the help of my father-in-law. That has fixed it for good - knock on wood. So you may want to figure out what's clogging it up and go straight for the source to fix it for good.

Had the same issue. had it snaked a few times and thought it was my trees roots so I was using rootkill but when it happened again I ask the city to drop their camera in and they found a dropped pipe..unfortunately it was on my side of the easement but they dug it up for me so my plumber repaired a poor joint done by the builder (too short) so it was leaking on day one. Then they dropped some extra dirt for me to fill the hole. The Saginaw water dept. helped me that time.

Knowing the problems that trees & shrubs can cause when they are too close to a foundation this is one of the first things we did after moving in..... We had a good time putting the Jeeps to work! I suppose if things start backing up again we will have to dig in a little further. Thanks for all the advice everyone! It gives us a lot to consider.
