MSD Project

Well I allways wanted to go MSD. I wanted the off road water proof box, but have been scared about the bad wrap on the net. The off road box comes with a 1 year warranty. Meanwhile the other non-potted boards come with a lifetime. SO! I bought the MSD 6AL with the lifetime warranty. But what to do about water, mud, shock???? This thing is air tight now. Does it need to breathe? If so, I can tap the box and run a breather line to the cage like an axle breather. [image]local://480/BCC11F2562A64A7CA3A6C257630BE46B.jpg[/image]

Man that look nice. You can always throw some rhino liner on it. Maybe even build it's own little cage with some 1/8.

Got it Mounted and Started it up. The motor seemed to run a bit smoother at idle. The baby was asleep so I could not test drive. [image]local://480/C1C19F978D6948DDAFBA80D953BE1940.jpg[/image]

Ya I tend to run the mud boggs and sink her in the trinity so I didnt think it would hold up fully exposed.

Well, maybe I should have stuck to the original equipment. I have had nothing but problems with this thing. First the low idle wanted to stall then the high rpm under boost was spitting and popping. I changed out the wires to MSD Pro Street and gapped the plugs .005 more. I think she is running ok, but now a new problem. I went to start it this morning, and nothing. No spark. When I crank it the volt guage goes down to 10 volts. Is that the problem? I put her on the charger and boosted it up. She fired right up when that happened. I left it on the charger and battery voltage was at 13. Tried starting and..again nothing. Boosted it again and fired up. What the heck!

Does it turn over fast when cranking? Sounds like you may have a weak battery. Could be a wiring issue causing a voltage drop - Check your voltage at the battery vs at the MSD box as well as the coil. I may be wrong but I would think the MSD box needs a way to cool.

Ya my guage said she wasw dropping to 11 volts while cranking. I spoke with MSD and they said it should fire down to 9 volts. I am going to re-check all grounds and see key voltage at the msd box. I am going to clean up all of the battery connections while I am at it. The funny thing is yesturday she started and ran fine. Was it the real cold weather? I have a fairly new Yellow top in it and just load tested the battery. It did not drop below 12.

Check you coil voltage as well, if this is too low with wider gap plugs it may not be fully energizing.

Ok cleaned up all the grounds and made new connections on the cables. She fired right up every time now. Still having an issue. Pretty much at full throttle off the line near the rev limiter (4500 rpm) she breaks up and starts detonating. I back off on the throttle and ease it faster it goes away. Then after that try it again and is running fine. My air/fuel guage is reading rich, but has been jumping around after i got her hot ( at Idle). I ordered a new O2 sensor and IAC and will be putting them in tomorrow. If I still have this issue I will bypass the MSD and go back to stock coil. We will see tomorrow. I am replacing the IAC because sometimes it idles great then she jumps to 1100 rpm. Tried re-setting the computer and throttle Pot 4 times with no progress. So i think the IAC is sticking.

Swaping the stock coil back in sounds like a good idea to test. Sounds like you might have another unrelated problem. Some of the newer Toyota motors will warp the cylinder head if overheated even once, not sure if your motor is susceptible to the same problem. Might want to do a quick compression test.

No the big problem with these motors is cracking. I know I have a crack and/or blow ring. This motor is dieing but I want to throw a rod before I put the new one in. The funny thing is it ran fine before the MSD????

Ok new O2 sensor and new IAC. Idles lower now. Probably until the EEC reads the new IAC. I havent taken it out yet to see if she still acts up. It is running a bit rough at idle, but that is due to the new IAC I believe.
