Im not big on standards, i like the comfort of the automatic. The standards tend to stall out and buck the ridges and roll back wards. Ive heard the argument about being able to push the clutch in if you rare the front up. But I dont think that offsets the ability to be able to break and trottle and drink a beer at the same time. A standard you have to use both feet and both hands assuming you have a throttle on your shifter. Any way you have some decisions to make and I dont think I helped you a bit there Money Pit. So my vote is go AUTOMATIC!!!!!!

rutz79 But I dont think that offsets the ability to be able to break and trottle and drink a beer at the same time. A standard you have to use both feet and both hands assuming you have a throttle on your shifter. A skilled standard tranny driver can operate the throttle, brake and clutch with two feet, the gear shift and radio with one hand, the steering wheel and blinkers with the other hand AND STILL drink beers... You on the other hand...automatic tranny and you still have to give your drink to someone else when you do something. How do I know? It says so on the back of your rig

However.....if you, Moneypit are taking a pole I would take a light up stripper pole, if you are taking a poll my vote is for manual. In the end you build it you wheel it.

I prefer the manual myself, but I see alot of talk among people who consider themselves 'extreme' wheelers that an auto is better for that application. Also: thought you had ditched the sami case awhile ago?
--Channing Ramos I can follow Jeeps. I just dont need to go to the mall or the mechanics. '94 Samurai. With stuff. Those who wont use violence are subject to those that do.

I have still been running the Sammy T-case. I have been waiting for the weak C-3 auto tranny to die so I can continue my swap. Instead the t-case bearings are shot and the tranny's only issue right not is that weak front pump seal. All I need to do to fix it is remove it and drill the weap hole bigger behind it. It builds too much pressure there when it gets hot and blows out past the seal. I had stick when I had the sammy drive train. I went auto and have gotten use to it. I can go either way. I gues you can say I am a SWINGER!!!!!

So if I got this right the pole so far is: 1 - Auto Transmission 3- Manual Transmission Right?

If I go with the manual tranny do I mess with the Dana 20? The Dana 18 has a lower gear ratio. I can swap the gears from the D18 to the D20.

Depends on what your wanting to do with it as in what kind of wheeling are you going to primarily do. Mud slinging, bogging, drag strip racing, anything that requires high wheels spin get that 20 in there. Crawling and your going to want to lowest gear ratio possible. If you can get the gears swapped I would. Manual also gives you more control. Yeah you have to play around with pedals and shifters, but your a good enough driver that you can multitask.

I can't help you on this issue because I've been debating it forever too. I have a C6 in mine now with the V8, but am still considering a 4 speed.
Jimmy Earp Mine: 92 Explorer, Dana 44/9", full width w/5.13's, and 36's...currently under the Hers: 96 XJ Cherokee, 8.8/30 4-wheel discs, 4.11's, locked in rear, custom winch bumper in the works

Ok so I got 1 solid Auto vote and 1 solid Stick. I do have the stick ready to drop in (Minus New Motor Mounts, Trans Mount, Exhaust Welding, Drive Shaft Length adjustment, clutch pedal installation, and other minor stuff.) Automatics will take less more because the current set up will only need the t-case mount modified, and drive shaft length modified. I still wish I could get a more decisive pole to help steer me in the right direction.

C4 with the d20 all the way!!! Standard is a PITA on big rocks imho with an auto you just sit back and have fun also you can full manual a c4 for pretty cheap. Pheonix transmission in weatherford can build you a bomb proof convertor for about 200 with a lifetime warranty

I can't break your 1 - 1 tie. Both have good points and bad points. It is like asking if a Chevy is better than a Ford.
