2009 Tundra rear suspension Leafing it to the experts Tuesday, December 27, 2011 10:55 AM (permalink)

Good news I should be receiving the rest or my parts so I'll be able to install a Camburg Long Travel Kit to my 2009 Tundra.  I ordered 2.5" inch triple bypass shocks, 2.5" fox shocks w/ dual rate Eibach springs and 2" air bump w/ cans.  This should give my IFS around 16" of travel per side.  With this kit, glass fenders and body mount mod I should be able to run 37s.  Not to bad for only adding 2 to 3 inches of lift to the front.

The question I have is how to setup the rear end of my truck to compliment the front and still be daily driver friendly.  I've thought about ordering a longer aftermarket leaf with larger shackles (8 to 10 inches), 2.5" triple bypass shocks to the rear to increase the rear wheel travel and some type of adjustable air bag kit to help when hauling or towing.  I'm planning on adding an ARB locker to the rear and maybe to the front when I change out my gears to 4.88s. What do you think?

There is always a trade off when setting up a suspension for good articulation vs towing. The airbags are a great helper for towing but get in the way when trying to get some major axle travel. Longer springs are good for better articulation but increases the leverage of the carried load resulting in less towing stability.

My recommendation would be to leave the back stock, wheel it a bit and see how it responds. Find out what you want to change and attack it with some parts. As for the ARB, these really help on the trails and can be unlocked for normal street use. If you are towing you might look into a limited slip / locker like Auburn Ected http://www.4wheelparts.co...t=101501&t_pl=9664 , that way you could have a limited slip when towing on the street and a spool when on the trails. Talk to Jason at the Fort Worth 4Wheel Parts (817 560-2455) to get our club discount price on whatever you go with.

I can't argue with that logic and in doing so hopefully I'll save myself a few bucks not buying items I don't need.
That being said I'm attaching a few pictures of what I ordered from Camburg for my Long Travel Kit.  Sure would be nice to meet some members who have worked with Camburg or Chaos LT Kits.

Picture of Eibach Coils (200lbs & 800lbs) and 2.5" Fox Shocks w/ Res

Drivers Side triple bypass shocks, bypass mount and 2.0 Fox Air Bumps

      Passenger Side

New Upper and Lower Control Arms.  I kept the axles shaft wrapped

Picture was taken in my entry on 16" tiles to give you an idea on the sizes.  I was told that I have everything I need to put the LT Kit on my Tundra.  I think something is missing.

Don't want to get dehydrated.  Now all I need is some people to help drink all this.  Some welding, wrenching, swapping axle shafts may be required..

Thanks JKKent.  It dose not look to complicated except for having to weld the bypass mounts and air bump mounts. Hell I forgot about the axle shafts.  Righty loosy and Lefty tighty, right? This is what happens when parents divorce and you live with your mom.  My mechanical and fabrication skills may be lacking and I don't have any welding skills, but there hasn't been a vehicle yet I couldn't break..  Who da man?

tmos468 ~ I'm sure it will be fun.  I always enjoyed learning new things when it comes to wrenching.  The last couple months have been frustrating.  Had a vendor send me the wrong size fiberglass bedsides and now they won't send me correct size even though they said they would.

JKKent ~ I'm sure there are quite a few people on here with fab skills. I'm hoping to meet some of them and other members at January meeting.  Just depends if I get a chance to go out to the deer lease by then or not.  Looking forward to lending a hand with other people on here with their rigs if they like.  Not sure how many members are around the Forney area.

Appreciate that Chris.  I know I shouldn't assume, but since you said you have a welder I'm going to assume that you have some welding skills?
I need to get a few things done before I get the LT Kit installed,  but let me know if you have any projects or builds you could use a hand with.  Wylie is about 34 miles from me.

That'd funny I have three project jeeps and all need work, the hard thing is my back has ruptured disk and so it hard for me to do lots. But beer and pain killers help a lot. Yes I can weld, I'm not the greatest but my welds don't break. anytime your ready let me know. Probly let me know the week before so I can get the shop cleaned up a bit

You sound like my wife.  Let me know if you're coming over so I can pick up. LOL.
Seriously I appreciate you letting me use your shop.  I'm trying to find out more information about replacing the factory axle shafts with the longer shafts provided by Camburg since I've never done something like this before.  I'm also looking into replacing the factory boot with an aftermarket one to help prevent it from tearing.

Yeah I bet he has better pain killers than what the VA prescribes me.

BTW anyone know a driveline place to swap out my axle shafts with longer axle shafts?  I'm guessing these will need to be pressed in?  Trying to find some type instructions for doing this.

Just an update on the Tundra.  Front fenders have been replaced with wider fenders with larger wheel openings.  Glassworks Unlimited sent the wrong bedsides again.  Can you say strike two.  I said the hell with paint and am having my entire truck sprayed with Line-X Xtra (color matched to the slate metallic)
